The Second Phase of the CapEFA was launched on 11 July 2013 by the former Director General of UNESCO, Ms. Irina Bokova, at Lilongwe Technical College and ended in July, 2017. The goal of the project was to support Malawi TVET reform efforts in order to improve its long-term relevance, efficiency, equity, as well as institutional and financial sustainability.
The CapEFA project, achieved the following: Clarified the roles amongst key stakeholders in TEVET for better development of the TVET sector; Curriculum Harmonisation; Development of Standards in some Trades; Development of a career guide book on TVET trades; Development of an administration guide on TEVET institutions; and Establishment of a Centre of Excellence at Lilongwe Technical College for Technical teacher professional development.
On 19th December, 2015, following the destruction of the library, the former Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano and the Vice Chancellor Prof. Robert Ridley made an appeal to the general public, NGOs, the international donor community, the United Nations as well as fellow citizens of goodwill to assist the library.
It is against this background that in 2016 UNESCO provided financial support of about MK35 million for the purchase of books and computers.
This year’s World Teachers Day celebration in Malawi will be held on two days and two venues: (1) in Lilongwe at Ching’ombe Full Primary school on 5th October and (2) on 9th October at Makawa Full Primary School in Mangochi.
On these days, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology will award over 100 outstanding primary and secondary school teachers together with their respective District Education Managers and Division Managers drawn from all education districts and education divisions of the country for their excellent work in delivering their teaching services.
Naphini Community Learning Centre (CLC) is located in Mlima village, Group Village Head (GVH) Mtogolo, Traditional Authority (T/A) Malemia, Domasi, Zomba. Its name comes from a tree called naphini in local language. With support from the Korea National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU) under the Bridge Programme, the Centre has been providing learning opportunities to the people in surrounding villages since 2010. The local leadership and members of the community have been trained and they demonstrate strong ownership in the management of the Centre. Currently, 500 students are registered at Naphini Centre comprising 60 students at nursery level/early childhood development (ECD), 420 students for part-time (after-school class) for primary school level pupils and 20 learners studying in the adult literacy class. Naphini has the largest enrolment among the CLCs in the eight Bridge partner countries.
One of the activities undertaken in 2016/17 was the training for Naphini CLC Management Committee members in use of ICT. As part of enhancing the knowledge and skills of the management team of Naphini CLC in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), a training course in computer was organised. Training content covered the following areas: Introduction to Computer Systems; Microsoft Windows XP and windows 7 and 8; Microsoft Office Word 2007, Excel 2007 and Power Point 2007; Internet and E-mails. At the end of the training, a laptop computer, a printer, and a solar power system were donated to Naphini CLC to enhance their use of ICT.
