On 18th December, 2015 Mzuzu University Library caught fire at around 3:00 hours. The fire destroyed 45,000 books among other learning materials. Mzuzu University authorities indicated that the destruction of the library affected the University’s academic calendar because the library is at the heart of efficient and effective delivery of education.

On 19th December, 2015, following the destruction of the library, the former Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano and the Vice Chancellor Prof. Robert Ridley made an appeal to the general public, NGOs, the international donor community, the United Nations as well as fellow citizens of goodwill to assist the library.

It is against this background that in 2016 UNESCO provided financial support of about MK35 million for the purchase of books and computers.
